The bright, dazzling moonlight streamed through the falling blossoms, shining down on me and Hyuk Mu-yeong. We sat facing each other. The distance between us was three jang (about nine meters). Neither of us was in good condition. From Hyuk Mu-yeong’s mouth, blood poured out endlessly as he sat cross-legged, his white long robe shredded in several places and dyed red. The bleeding wouldn’t stop. Not that I was any better off. Below my left shoulder was empty. The companion that had been with me firmly for fifty-three years was now gone.
