There was no room to ponder the afterlife, not when even the immediate future was a blur of chaos, a battlefield where survival from one minute to the next was a struggle more pressing than any question about life after death. Rifts opened, spewing out monsters, and beings who awakened supernatural powers, espers, rose up to fight them.
