I had simply drifted through time, and before I knew it, I was an adult. The only companies willing to hire someone like me were the ones constantly short on staff—black companies through and through. Even in workplaces that seemed to challenge labor laws head-on, I was surrounded by people in similar circumstances. Days filled with unpaid overtime, working weekends, and a meager salary.
